Fixing Citrix Performance Problems When Working From Home

Audio/Video Streaming

Most users face performance issues and complain about keyboard and mouse lag and application sluggishness. When we troubleshoot these issues we often find that the root cause of these performance issues are due to users streaming audio/video. For best Citrix performance use audio/video outside your Citrix session (on your local computer).

Number of users/devices at home

Users often complain that they have the best internet speed at home and they are not running any other application besides Citrix, but still face performance issues. In many cases we have found that the internet at home is in use by other users/devices. This will divide the internet bandwidth with the number of users connected to internet. If you are working from home, advise other internet users not to stream video/audio during work hours. If they are on cell phones, advise them to use LTE instead of Wi-Fi connection.

Wired vs. Wireless Internet

When working from home it is highly advisable to use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. There are many factors which make Ethernet connection favorable compared to Wi-Fi connection. Wi-Fi connections usually have inconsistent bandwidth, data latency, data security and performance issues. With wired Ethernet connection you will have faster data transfer and stable bandwidth. Users will rarely face lagging issues and there are fewer chances of a drop in connection. Moreover, the Ethernet connection can handle huge amount of data and work more reliably without any connection interruption.

Update Windows for vulnerabilities/performance

Microsoft provides vulnerability and security update every month for their Windows operating system. These updates are not only necessary to fix vulnerabilities, but also fix any performance issues in the operating system. It is highly recommended to check for Windows updates every month (after the second Tuesday) in order to keep your computer secure and stable.  You can check and update by Open Start Menu and click on Settings > Update & Security settings > Windows Update. Click on the Check for updates button.

Reset the modem periodically

Your modem is a system itself and like other systems they are not designed to run all the time. By simply restarting the modem it can solve most performance issues. It has been found during troubleshooting that when the modem is left on for long period of time, the performance is reduced after a while.  Resetting the modem will fix most of the connection problems, improve performance and resolve Wi-Fi issues. You can reboot the modem and router by unplugging it for 10 seconds and then reconnecting it to power.

Reset your internet (Chrome) browser

If your Google Chrome Web browser experiences lagging or performance issues, you can reset the Chrome browser to factory default. Resetting Chrome will not affect your bookmarks or saved passwords, but everything else will revert to default settings. You can reset chrome by click More (three dots) and then Settings. At the bottom, click Advanced. Under “Reset and cleanup,” click Reset Settings and then Reset Settings.

Reset Wi-Fi password periodically

If you cannot use an Ethernet connection and have no choice except using the Wi-Fi, it is recommended to change your wireless password once every 6 months to remove those with access to your internet that you may not be aware of.
