Popcorn Time – Malware

Malware Attacks Continue to Evolve

There are a ton of malware attacks out there, all designed to infiltrate your system and to get some sort of financial gain from releasing your data back to you. Most of us have seen or experienced some form of ransomware attack where the hacker demands a payment (usually in bitcoins) in exchange for your data. The Popcorn Time malware attack is very similar to other malware in terms of infecting a computer, encrypting your data drives and shutting you out of the system BUT there is a twist.

How Does Popcorn Time Work?

Say your system gets corrupted with Popcorn Time malware and now the hacker demands money to release your data and to make your systems whole again. You have two options – either to make the payment to the hacker or you can share a link with two people to corrupt their systems instead. Much like sharing an app referral code, you can forward a link to two victims of your choosing and if they end up opening the links, the hacker will give you the key to decrypt your data and instead focus on the two targets you have provided.

Hackers are Innovating

Hackers are getting increasingly innovative with their attacks with a focus on increasing the number of computers and networks they infect. Popcorn Time is a new strategy to make a hacker’s victim a part of their malicious scheme and to increase the number of users affected by the attack. A user will be more susceptible to opening a link from a familiar name rather than an unknown entity. The message from hackers is essentially to infect others to get free access to your data!

Your Best Case Scenario...

Your best strategy is to avoid becoming a victim of the attacks in the first place. At Triella, we provide several security protocols to ensure that your computers/networks remain protected from such attacks.  In the rare case where you do get infected (it has been 2 years since any of our clients were impacted by ransomware) we have security measures to roll you back to where you were before the infection entered your network. If you are concerned, call us now to learn how we can enhance the security of your systems.  647.426.1004
