Twitter – Why Should I Care?

Thinking about becoming a member of Twitter? We have outlined some of the main benefits of joining and participating in the social media platform.

Twitter is one of the most prolific and popular social media platforms in today’s world.  Created in 2006, Twitter is an online social media networking website that allows users to send short, 140 character messages to their contacts, followers, and the public.
Despite its popularity, there are many people who currently do not have a Twitter account. Whether this is by choice or not, we have outlined some benefits of Twitter for users thinking about signing up.

What Are the Benefits of Joining Twitter?

There are many benefits to joining Twitter, whether for personal or professional reasons.  Here are 3 reasons why you should sign up for Twitter.

1) Micro-Blogging: Quick and Simple Messages

Unlike other social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn, Twitter uses a form of communication called micro-blogging.  Micro-blogging is defined as “the act or practice of posting brief entries on a blog or social media website.” [1]  Twitter is set up in the form of 140 character tweets where users can create personalized messages, polls, add graphics, etc. to send to their friends and followers.

In the age of technology, where we are consistently bombarded with information, having simple sound bites or messages allows information to disseminate quickly and grab a reader’s attention.

Real World Example:   The power goes out in your area.  Simply look for messages with the harsh tag #TorontoHydro and you will find out the extent of the problem quickly and any resolution will also be tweeted out quickly.  This is much better than calling the phone number for Toronto Hydro which will be quite busy.

2) Reaches a Wide Audience

After posting a message or tweet, it has the ability to distribute and reach a wide audience instantaneously.  People have the ability to like, share, and respond to tweets and messages which the author of a popular tweet will be able to see and respond to in kind.
For business owners, being able to see and respond to feedback from your tweets allows you to connect and keep in contact with your colleagues and customers.

Real World Example:   A firm can Tweet to its customer/client base to keep them informed about activities that may be of interest.  Because the tweets are short and to the point, the information can be digested quickly.  More detailed information can be supplied in a link.

3) Networking Tool for Keeping in Touch with Friends, Colleagues, and Prospects

Like many social media platforms, Twitter is a great networking tool providing ample opportunities for a user to share and obtain up-to-date information on their interests and hobbies from their friends and colleagues.
For business owners, having similar fields of interest and keeping track of the latest developments in your industry will allow you to connect with customers and find new opportunities for sales and collaboration.
