Updates to Zoom Security

Since we wrote our last article on Zoom’s security issues, Zoom has stepped up to the challenge with many enhancements to their platform.  Here is a list of enhancements for paid users of the platform:

As of April 18:

Ability to determine which data center regions you want your Zoom data to traverse.  Thus, you will be able to pick the data centers you want your data going through and by doing so the phone numbers offered for dial in.  Data centers are available in Canada and the United States as well as all other major regions in the world.  You can find this in Preferences.

Data for free users not in China will never be routed through China.  It will remain in their region.

Lock the meeting:  After a meeting has started, the host can lock the meeting.   Once locked, no one can join the meeting.

Security:  This icon now has all of the security features available to the host from one button.  When clicked the host has the option to:

  1. Lock the meeting
  2. Enable a waiting room (this would place participants in room where they need to be admitted to join the conference)
  3. Remove participants (kick someone off if you don’t want them in the conference)
  4. Restrict participant feature such as sharing their screens, chatting, renaming themselves and annotating the hosts shared content.

Meeting ID:  This will not longer appear in the title bar.

New Software:  Zoom software has been updated at least twice since our last article.  Be sure you are running the latest software.

These changes are all helping to make Zoom safer and more secure by default rather than having to consider enabling features to get the same results.
